Ms. Caitlin O'Meara's Portfolio

Learning Outcome One

Learning Outcome One: Demonstrate a solid foundation in the arts and sciences.

In order to prove a solid foundation in the arts and sciences, I have gathered a biology paper written in the fall semester of 2009, a world literature paper written in the spring Semester of 2010, and my CAPP report that shows the variety of courses I have taken and excelled in.

The biology paper that I wrote explores the decrease in leatherback turtle population over the past two decades. The paper is a scientifically focused writing piece that demonstrates a specific style of writing I used in order to show my comprehension of and experience with science.

I have also included a paper written for a world literature course in order to show a different style of writing that reflects my knowledge of literary analysis. The paper focuses on deconstructing Salmon Rushdie’s use of the frame tale in Midnight’s Children and demonstrates my ability to both appreciate and analyze the art that is literature. I also included this paper because, just as James A. Banks writes in his book, Educating Citizens in a Multicultural Society, I believe that integrating content from various cultures into the classroom is very important. I therefore found my analysis of Midnight’s Children, a book set in India as it transitioned from British rule to independence, to be crucial preparation for helping my future students analyze literature as well as use literature to learn about other cultures.

I have taken every opportunity I can to expand upon my knowledge in the arts and sciences through working hard in various subjects, as reflected in my course work and grades that are shown in my CAPP report. I have also continuously aimed to further my appreciation and participation in the arts through performing in and attending a variety of theater performances, visiting museums, and performing in various choir groups for twelve years.
